Med/surg ~ all pediatric patients; low-acuity adult med/surg

Typical nurse to patient ratio:

1:5 or 6

Typical pt diagnosis:

Peds ~ general diagnosis (i.e., dehydration, pneumonia); Adult ~ diabetes, cellulites, pneumonia, asthma

Common skills utilized:

PALS (req within one yr of employment), IV access (Alaris IV system)

Most common meds / those nurses must be familiar with:

IV antibiotics, pedi doses, adult oral medications

Care extenders used:

Nurse Techs ~ assist with patient’s personal care & needs

Certification for Differential:

RN-BC (Pediatric Nurse Certification, ANCC) or Pediatric Nursing Certification Board
